A short driveway, little space along the fence, and the need for convenient access to the property. In such conditions, choosing the right gate requires special attention. One solution can be a folding gate, which thanks to its folding leaves needs less space to open.
In this IQFENCE project, we used exactly this type of structure in the SPESSO model by Velago. The set is completed by fence sections, a pedestrian gate, a multimedia post with a built-in intercom and CAME automation.
How does a folding gate work?
A folding gate, also called a bifold gate, has leaves divided into connected segments. As it opens, the segments fold against each other instead of moving as one long leaf.
Thanks to this, the gate takes up less space in the depth of the driveway than a classic swing gate of comparable width. It also does not need a long section along the fence for the gate to slide back, as required by a self-supporting sliding gate.
This is especially useful where you need to reconcile the width of the entrance with limited space on the plot.
When is a folding gate worth considering?
When there is not enough space for a sliding gate
A self-supporting sliding gate requires a sufficiently long space at the side of the entrance to accommodate the entire sliding leaf together with the counterweight. On a narrow plot or with an entrance located close to the property boundary, it may be difficult to create such a section.
A folding structure makes it possible to plan the opening of the gate at the posts, without the need to slide a long leaf along the fence.
When the driveway is too short for traditional leaves
A classic double-leaf gate needs free space for the movement of both leaves. If the garage or parking space is close to the entrance, opening the gate may interfere with a parked car.
Folding segments limit how far the gate moves into the property. This makes it easier to arrange a short driveway, although the parking position still needs to be marked outside the working area of the leaves.
When modernising an existing entrance
A folding gate can also work well on an already developed property, where the position of the building, fencing and driveway has already been set. It makes it possible to look for a solution tailored to the existing space.
Whether installation is possible depends on the entrance dimensions, the structure of the posts and the terrain. That is why we begin choosing the gate with a measurement and an on-site check of the conditions.
The main advantages of a folding gate
- Space saving on the driveway
- No need for a long side run-back
- Possibility of using automation
- Consistent appearance of the fencing
- Greater freedom when planning the entrance
SPESSO with CAME automation - our project
In this project, the folding gate is part of a complete fence in the SPESSO model by Velago. The shared design of the gate, pedestrian gate and fence sections gives the front of the property a neat look.
We used CAME automation to operate the gate. It makes it possible to open and close the entrance without manually folding the leaves, which makes everyday use of the property easier.
The entry area is complemented by a multimedia post with a built-in intercom. The whole set combines a modern form with solutions matched to the available space.
What is worth checking before choosing?
A folding gate needs less space, but it still requires free room for the movement and folding of the segments. When planning it, you need to take into account the width of the passage after opening, the distance from cars and other obstacles, and any slope of the driveway.
The right choice of automation, safety features and careful adjustment of the mechanism also matter. Proper installation and regular servicing help keep the gate operating smoothly.
